A is for Ao
An A to Z Book of Feelings
A Note to Caregivers:
Ao’s name comes from the Japanese word ao (青), a color that traditionally spans blue and green and is associated with calm, clarity, and attunement rather than brightness or force. Ao is a caretaker figure designed to support emotional regulation and pausing. He sits inside a moon pearl, a symbol found across East Asian folklore representing calm awareness and reflected light. Ao’s presence is also influenced by Japanese folk traditions of gentle helpers, particularly Jizō (Ojizō-sama), a protector of children and travelers who watches over moments of transition by staying close rather than intervening. Drawing as well from mindfulness practices in Buddhism and from quiet, companion-centered storytelling traditions, Ao helps children slow down, notice their bodies, and wait for strong feelings to pass. He models an essential social-emotional skill: regulation through presence, reminding children and caregivers that safety and understanding begin with being held, not hurried.
